Mayo Clinic Schools of Medicine’s mission is to prepare students for a rewarding career in allied health care. They offer a variety of graduate medical education and clinical associate degree programs. All allied health professionals employed at Mayo Clinic are expected to uphold high professional standards and ethical standards in the treatment they provide to patients. All allied health professionals who graduate from their training program are required to complete mandatory continuing education to maintain a Registered Nurse license (RN). Graduates will then be able to take an exam that will certify them as RNs.
Mayo Clinic is part of an extensive network of prestigious medical schools and universities that collectively offer excellent graduate medical education and research programs. The medical school’s undergraduate training program helps students acquire the skills and knowledge needed to provide quality patient care in all settings. During the graduate program, students can choose to pursue a specialty of choice or choose to specialize in one of the many areas of biomedical sciences that are offered at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine. Specializations at Mayo range from neurobiological approaches to pediatric oncology and rehabilitation to adult oncology and cancer treatment. Many of the areas of specialization at Mayo are interdisciplinary in nature, offering students a wide variety of general medical knowledge and application.
Students take the graduate level comprehensive exam to qualify for the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification during graduate school. Students also participate in the nationwide Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) Training Program. The CMA training program provides students with hands-on experience by working with patients in hospitals, nursing homes, and other facilities. The Commission accredits the program on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.
Students can also choose to pursue a Doctorate in Medical Science, which prepares students to either train to become doctors or to open their own private practice in a medical facility or doctor’s office. Students complete their degree at Mayo. There are two main areas of focus within the Doctorate in Medical Science degree program at Mayo. The first area focuses on research and development, and the second area focuses on diagnostic procedures and surgery.
Students can opt to participate in Mayo’s Clinical Studies Program, which is focused on providing first-year residents with the clinical knowledge they need to start their careers in the medical field. This program trains students in a specific area of medicine. Students learn about specific diseases and medical conditions, as well as the prevention and treatment of these conditions. This program also provides students with hands-on practice using diagnostic and clinical devices. As part of the clinical studies program, students take an internship at a local hospital or clinic.
Students can also choose to participate in Mayo’s Associate Degree in General Biology. This degree program enables students to pursue a career in a wide variety of specialties, including pediatrics, obstetrics/gynecology, and women’s health. Students complete their coursework at Mayo. This degree program may require students to take specific classes such as molecular biology, cell and DNA biology, and microbiology.
