Kheerganga Is a popular trekking destination and a spiritual site for Hindus and Sikhs alike. In the Parvati Valley, the renowned hot water springs are said to be calming and rejuvenating. Many legends surround this location, which are now sung as folklore among the people. Beautiful campsites in the Parvati Valley, with views of the Himalayan snow-capped mountains, are only one of the many things to look forward to.

The Kheerganga got its name after a legend. It is believed that when Kartikye lost a race to Ganesha then Kartikye sat down to meditate in the forest of the Himalayas. After several attempts when no one could find Kartikye, Lord Shiva took it upon himself and sprouted a river of kheer (rice sweet).

The huge view of green landscapes under a clear sky and majestic mountains is best enjoyed between the months of April to October on the Kheerganga walk.The trip to Kheerganga from Kasol, base of the trip, is in itself an awe-inspiring one as you traverse through the humble surroundings adorned with panoramic views of the landscapes.

How to Reach:

Kheerganga makes it base at Barshaini which is well connected to Kasol and you can reach the base by any of the options below:

By Airway: The nearest Airport is Kullu Manali Airport, however the frequency of the flights can pose a problem. Next nearest airport is Mohali Airport in Chandigarh which is at a distance of 300 kms. 

By Railway: You can take a train up till Joginder Railway in the state of Himachal Pradesh station which is a four-hour ride to Kasol and then get a taxi or bus to Barshaini.

By Roadway: Taking a roadtrip is perhaps the best and most convenient way to reach the base of Kheerganga trek. If you drive from Delhi to Kasol it is around 565 km away. The 12-hour drive is beautified with the best of views.

Trek routes:

Kheerganga trek offer its hikers three routes to choose from

1. Nakthan Trail:

This is the fastest route with an approximate total time of 4 hours up to the Kheerganga. This is also the most popular one and you will find many board signs to lead your way. You will come across the beautiful village of Nakthan alongside the Parvati River making the hustle worthwhile.

2. Kalga Trail:

The Kalga route takes you through the dense forest of Himalayas after you cross the Barshaini bridge. Halfway through your trek the route merges with the Nakthan trail.

3. Tosh Trail:

On this trail you will come across two rivers- Tosh River and Parvati River. This is preferable for the tourists who are already staying in Tosh and make their way from Tosh to Kheerganga. This route merges with the Nakthan trail ahead.

Things to carry:

Clothing: your regular wears plus light thermal wear, Trek pants, windproof jacket, scarf, raincoat or poncho.

Trekking: Waterproof backpack, Trekking poles, hiking shoes, sleeping bag, tent, trek route or map. 

Accessories: Sunglasses, Sunscreen, lip balm and toiletries 

Document: carry your photocopy and Adhar card.

Electronics: Camera with extra batteries, power bank.

Medicines: Your prescription if any, First-Aid, Crocin.

Eatables: Glucose/ORS, dry fruits, water bottles of at least 2 liters, chocolates and snacks.

When to visit:

Kheerganga trek brings out different flavours in different seasons. The summers are the best time to spot rare wildlife species under the bright blue skies. The green lush forests and calm beautiful lakes make up for the best vacation. However, it can cost you a little more because of the peak tourist season.

Winters are best to experience snow carpeted landscapes and the high mighty mountains covered in snow. The only downside can be the chilling weather dropping down to -4 degree Celsius.
