Hydraulic pumps are used in a wide range of industrial applications. The uses range from pumping fluids in mining operations to running high-pressure tools. All hydraulic pumps have some similarities. However, there are several different types that each have their functions. Below is an overview of the most common types of hydraulic pumps.
Diaphragm Pumps
Diaphragm pumps operate by exerting pressure on a flexible membrane. This aims to create suction that draws fluid into the pump’s cylinder. The pump’s membrane is mainly rubber or molded plastic. It can also be from materials with varying degrees of strength.
Gear Pumps
Gear pumps can flow high-pressure liquids through porous materials, such as sand or gravel. Many gear pumps are from steel or plastic. This type of hydraulic pumping failure typically does not result in an environmental hazard.
Centrifugal Pumps
Centrifugal pumps have many different subcategories. The general design is a chamber with a pump inside that creates pressure by spinning. The centrifugal pump has an input shaft and an output shaft. The high-pressure side of the pump spins at very high speeds to form a partial vacuum inside the casing. The low-pressure side uses a piston to move fluid through the orifice between turns of the output shaft.
Propeller Pumps
Propeller pumps have blades on the pump’s casing. The edges are of a fixed pattern so that they do not turn. The low-pressure side is attached directly to the output shaft. The purpose of a propeller pump is to provide high pressure and deliver it at short distances. Due to their similarities with propellers, propelling water through pipes has been compared with using an aircraft’s propellers for water propulsion.
Hydraulic pumps are also known as hydraulic oil pumps. There are different types and power ratings for these pumps. Your selection is dependent on the purpose you intend to use them for. A hydraulic pump is a device that forces fluid out of a reservoir. As a result, it provides power for industrial machinery such as pumps or turbines.
