What is the P0420 Code?
The PCM has discovered underperformance of the catalytic converter’s efficiency on Bank 1 as indicated by the P0420 code. Either a defective catalyst or a false warning brought on by an O2 sensor can be to blame.
Two O2 sensors, one in front of and one behind the catalytic converter, are used by the powertrain control module (PCM) to gauge its effectiveness.
When the car is running in a closed loop and at operating temperature, the upstream oxygen sensor’s readings should vary if it is functioning properly. The readings of the downstream oxygen sensor should remain constant if everything is in order and the catalytic converter isn’t malfunctioning.
The catalytic converter is not functioning as planned when the oxygen sensors give comparable signals to one another.
The Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will record the P0420 fault code and illuminate the check engine light if the voltage of the downstream oxygen sensor starts to drop and fluctuate like the upstream oxygen sensor, which indicates that the oxygen levels are too high.
A PO420 code is produced when the catalyst’s efficiency is temporarily or permanently reduced due to an improper air-fuel combination.
Causes of the P0420 Code
A malfunctioning catalytic converter is the P0420 code’s most frequent cause. Additionally, it may be brought on by a broken muffler deletion, an intake leak, an exhaust system leak, an erroneous oxygen sensor, or a misaligned catalytic converter.

How to diagnose the P0420 code?
- To access the PCM’s recorded fault codes, use an OBD-II scanner.
- Check the upstream (rear) oxygen sensor’s real-time data. The reading from the oxygen sensor downstream should be constant. Check to see if the downstream (rear) oxygen sensor is functioning properly.
- Check for any more codes that may be the P0420 error.
- If required, fix ignition issues, fuel system issues, or misfires.
- Check the back oxygen sensor for wear that may be excessive or damaged.
- Perform a test drive while examining the freeze frame data to check the functionality of the downstream (rear) oxygen sensor.
- If the catalytic converter is broken, look for PCM upgrades that are currently available. Updates to the PCM are needed once the catalytic converter is changed.
P0420 Code diagnosis mistakes
- Exiting the diagnostic process before replacing the oxygen sensors
- Use your diagnostic scanner to search for other error codes. You have a misfiring engine if you see codes like P0300, P0308, P0302, P0303, P0304, P0307, P0305, P0306, and P0301; the misfires may be the source of the P0420 error code. In this situation, you should first address the misfires, then clear the codes and check to see whether the P0420 code reappears.
- If you come across DTC codes such as P0171, P0172, P0174, or P0175, your engine is either operating richly or leanly. This might be caused by a bad fuel injector, excessive or inadequate fuel pressure, a bad MAF sensor, a bad engine coolant temperature sensor, or practically any other kind of bad engine sensor. After addressing the air-fuel ratio, the P0420 error code should disappear.
What repairs can fix the P0420 code?
- Replace the muffler or fix muffler leaks.
- Identify and address any misfiring issues.
